If you are a sports coach registered with the National Registry of Coaches (NROC), maintaining a valid first aid certification is not just good practice. It is a requirement. Athletes and participants in sporting activities are at heightened risk of injuries, cardiac events and other medical emergencies, and coaches are often the first on the scene when these situations arise.

The Standard First Aid with CPR and AED course is specifically designed to meet the needs of NROC registered coaches. The programme covers the basic principles and practice of first aid, management of breathing difficulties, wounds and bleeding, unconscious casualties, fractures, burn wounds, bites and stings, and the blood circulatory system. Participants also receive hands-on training in CPR and AED use, giving them the confidence to respond to cardiac emergencies in sporting and training environments.

Sporting environments present unique challenges for first aiders. Heat-related illnesses, concussions, ligament injuries and sudden cardiac arrest are all scenarios that coaches may encounter. The Standard First Aid course prepares coaches to assess these situations quickly, provide appropriate initial care and make informed decisions about when to seek professional medical assistance.

The certification is valid for two years and must be renewed through a refresher course before expiry. For NROC registered coaches, maintaining a current certification demonstrates a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of your athletes and is an essential component of professional coaching practice.
